Espresso coming out only as drops usually means water is struggling to pass through the coffee puck. The most common causes are a grind that is too fine, too much coffee in the basket, a clogged basket, or a puck that has been compressed unevenly. Clean the basket and portafilter first, then adjust the grinder coarser and reduce the dose if needed.
What slow drops usually mean
A few drops at the beginning of an extraction can be normal. Espresso machines often take several seconds to build pressure before a steady stream appears. The problem is more likely a restriction if the coffee continues to drip slowly, the pump sounds strained, or little to no liquid reaches the cup.
The goal is not simply to make espresso flow faster. A very fast, pale stream can indicate the grind is too coarse or the puck is under-dosed. Make one adjustment at a time so you can identify the cause.
Check the basket and portafilter first
Coffee oils and fine grounds can block the small holes in a portafilter basket. A pressurized basket can also become restricted if its outlet or valve is clogged.
- Turn off the machine and allow the portafilter to cool enough to handle safely.
- Remove the basket if it is removable.
- Rinse both the basket and portafilter under water.
- Hold the basket up to a light and look for blocked holes.
- Use the cleaning method specified by the manufacturer. Do not force sharp objects through holes if doing so could damage the basket.
- Run water through the group head briefly without the portafilter attached.
If water flows normally from the group head but not through the basket, the basket or portafilter is the likely restriction. A worn, damaged, or permanently blocked basket is usually inexpensive to replace.
Make the grind coarser
A grind that is too fine creates a dense puck that resists water. This is the most common reason espresso comes out as drops after changing beans, adjusting the grinder, or using a new grinder.
Adjust the grinder slightly coarser, then grind and brew again. If your grinder uses stepped settings, move only a small number of steps at a time. If it uses a continuous adjustment, make a small change rather than turning the dial substantially.
Do not change the grind while the grinder is running unless the grinder manufacturer specifically allows it. Some grinders can jam or suffer damage when adjusted under load.
A coarser grind should produce a faster flow. If the shot then gushes, move slightly finer on the next attempt instead of making a large adjustment.
Check the dose and tamp
Too much coffee can press against the shower screen or leave insufficient headspace in the basket. Either condition can restrict flow.
Try these checks:
- Confirm that the coffee dose matches the basket size and the machine's instructions.
- Avoid filling a single basket with a double-basket dose, or vice versa.
- After tamping, check that the puck is not visibly touching the shower screen when the portafilter is locked in place.
- Tamp level and consistently. Extremely hard tamping is less often the main problem than too fine a grind or too large a dose, but an uneven or excessive puck density can still slow extraction.
- Distribute the grounds evenly before tamping so one dense area does not block water.
If the machine flows normally with less coffee, the original dose was probably too large for that basket or setting.
Look for clumps and channel blockage
Very fine particles or clumps can create a compact section in the puck. Break up visible clumps with a suitable distribution tool, or gently distribute the grounds with a clean, thin tool if the grinder and basket instructions allow it. Avoid scraping the basket or using anything that can shed material into the coffee.
A puck that is both very fine and unevenly distributed may produce a few drops from one area while allowing water to bypass another area. This can taste both bitter and weak because the coffee is extracting unevenly.
Check for leaks and incorrect setup
If water is escaping around the portafilter rather than passing through the coffee, inspect the seal and locking position.
- Make sure the portafilter is fully inserted and locked according to the machine's instructions.
- Wipe the basket rim and group-head gasket clean.
- Look for a torn, flattened, or loose group-head gasket.
- Check whether water is leaking from the portafilter edge, steam wand, or another connection.
- Confirm that the water tank is seated correctly and contains enough water.
A damaged group-head gasket can cause leaking, but it does not usually explain a clean, slow drip through the coffee by itself. Replace the gasket if it is visibly damaged or no longer seals correctly. Disconnect power and follow the manufacturer's instructions before accessing any internal part.
Check the machine's water path
Run the machine without coffee, using the normal brew function. If water comes out strongly from the group head, the restriction is probably in the basket, grind, dose, or puck.
If water is also weak without the portafilter, check the following:
- The water tank is filled and properly seated.
- The intake screen or tank valve is not blocked.
- The machine is not in a steam or hot-water mode.
- The brew outlet and shower screen are clean.
- The machine does not need the cleaning or descaling procedure listed in its manual.
Mineral scale can restrict internal water passages, especially in areas with hard water. Use only the descaler and procedure approved for your machine. Descaling is not a substitute for cleaning coffee oils from the group head and basket.
When the pump or electrical system may be at fault
Consider a machine problem when water remains weak with the portafilter removed, the machine makes an unusual buzzing or rattling sound, it stops during brewing, or it leaks internally. A pump may also fail to draw water after the tank has run empty, although the correct recovery procedure varies by machine.
Do not open the machine or work on its wiring while it is connected to power. Espresso machines combine electricity, heat, pressure, and water, so internal repairs are best handled by an authorized service center or a qualified technician.
If cleaning, descaling as directed, a correctly seated tank, and a clear group head do not restore water flow, compare the repair cost and machine condition before replacing internal parts. For an older or heavily scaled machine, replacement may be more sensible than a pump repair.
A quick adjustment sequence
Use this order to isolate the problem:
- Brew briefly without the portafilter. Confirm whether water flows from the group head.
- Clean the basket, portafilter, shower screen, and group-head area.
- Grind slightly coarser.
- Reduce the dose slightly if the basket is overfilled.
- Distribute the grounds evenly and tamp level.
- Check for leaks, a damaged gasket, and a properly seated water tank.
- Follow the manual's cleaning or descaling procedure if the bare group-head flow is weak.
- Seek service if water remains weak without coffee or the machine shows electrical, pressure, or internal leakage problems.
Avoid changing the grinder, dose, tamp, and extraction settings all at once. A single small change makes the result easier to interpret.
