When a single boiler is the better choice

With a single boiler, the order of operations matters. Some users brew first, switch to steam, and then steam milk. Others steam first and wait for the machine to return to brewing temperature. With a dual boiler, the workflow is more forgiving. You can prepare the portafilter, brew, and steam with fewer temperature transitions. Use the water recommended for the machine. Hard water can contribute to scale, restricted flow, heating problems, and premature component wear. Avoid descaling on an arbitrary schedule if the manufacturer specifies a different procedure, because some machines require particular products or service steps.
A single boiler may be the simpler long-term choice if you want fewer systems and do not need high-volume steaming. A dual boiler may be reasonable if the convenience of separate brew and steam temperatures outweighs the added complexity.

Choose a single boiler with a steam wait when you prioritize value, compactness, and espresso-focused use. It is a sensible fit for one or two drinks where milk steaming is occasional.
Choose a dual boiler when you routinely make milk drinks, prepare several drinks consecutively, or want brewing and steaming to operate independently. Pay for the second boiler because you need that workflow—not simply because the specification sounds more advanced.
If you are undecided, track your normal routine for a week: count how many drinks contain steamed milk, how often you make more than one drink, and whether the mode-switching pause would genuinely bother you. That usually provides a better answer than comparing boiler counts in isolation.
