Descaling removes mineral buildup from the water circuit, boiler, thermoblock, and valves of a home espresso machine. The basic process is to empty the machine, run a manufacturer-approved descaling solution through the brewing and hot-water circuits, allow it to work as directed, and flush the machine with fresh water. Always follow the instructions for your specific model first, because some machines have automatic descaling programs while others require a manual procedure.

When should you descale an espresso machine?

Descale when the manufacturer’s schedule calls for it, when the machine displays a descaling warning, or when you notice possible scale-related symptoms such as:

  • Slower water flow than usual
  • A weaker or inconsistent espresso stream
  • Unusual noise from the pump or heating system
  • Reduced hot-water or steam performance
  • Water temperature that seems inconsistent
  • Visible white or chalky mineral deposits
  • A machine that takes longer to heat

The correct interval depends on water hardness, how often you use the machine, and whether the machine has a water filter. A filter can reduce mineral buildup, but it does not necessarily eliminate the need to descale.

Before you start

Check the espresso machine manual for four details:

  1. The approved descaling product. Some manufacturers require a particular type of liquid or powder. Do not assume that vinegar, citric acid, or a generic product is safe for every machine.
  2. Whether the machine has an automatic program. Many machines require a button sequence or menu setting rather than a simple manual rinse.
  3. Which parts should be removed. A water filter may need to be removed before descaling, and some machines have separate procedures for removable boilers or brew groups.
  4. How much solution and water to use. Follow the stated dilution and fill levels instead of estimating.

You will generally need the compatible descaler, fresh drinking water, a container large enough to catch the discharge, and access to a sink. Make sure the machine is on a stable, heat-resistant surface.

How to descale a home espresso machine

1. Turn off and prepare the machine

Switch off the machine and let it cool if it has recently been used. Remove the portafilter and empty the drip tray and water tank. If the manual says to remove the water filter, take it out before adding the descaling solution.

Do not place descaler in the coffee basket or apply it directly to the outside of the machine. It belongs in the water tank or another location specified by the manufacturer.

2. Mix the descaling solution

Prepare the solution exactly as directed on the product label and in the machine manual. Use the recommended water amount and do not combine different cleaning chemicals.

Vinegar is not a universal substitute. It can leave an odor, may not be approved by the manufacturer, and may be unsuitable for seals or internal components in some machines. A manufacturer-approved espresso-machine descaler is the safer choice when compatibility is uncertain.

3. Start the descaling cycle

For a machine with an automatic program, select the descaling function and follow the prompts. The machine may dispense the solution in pauses through the group head, hot-water outlet, or steam wand.

For a manual procedure, dispense the solution through every water path the manual identifies. This commonly includes the brewing outlet and hot-water outlet. Some machines require the steam wand to be opened briefly; others specifically instruct you not to do so during part of the process. Use the manual rather than guessing.

Keep the container in place and monitor it so it does not overflow. Descaling liquid can irritate skin and eyes, so avoid splashing and follow the product’s safety directions.

4. Allow the solution to work

If the instructions call for pauses or soaking time, observe them. Do not leave the machine filled with solution longer than directed. The solution needs enough contact time to loosen mineral deposits, but prolonged exposure may not be appropriate for every machine.

Do not interrupt a programmed cycle unless the manual says it is safe. If the machine stops unexpectedly, turn it off only if necessary and consult the troubleshooting section of the manual.

5. Rinse the machine thoroughly

Empty the container and rinse it. Fill the water tank with fresh water, then run the machine’s complete rinse procedure. Flush all outlets identified in the instructions until the tank is empty or the machine indicates that rinsing is complete.

Refill the tank with fresh water and repeat the rinse if you can still smell or taste descaler. Do not make espresso or steam milk until the flushing process is complete and the water runs clear and odor-free.

6. Reinstall the water filter and clean removable parts

If you removed a water filter, reinstall it only after descaling and rinsing, unless the manual specifies a different order. Replace the filter if it has reached its service limit.

Rinse the water tank, drip tray, portafilter, and basket with clean water. Wipe away any solution that may have splashed onto the machine. Run a small amount of fresh water through the group head before preparing coffee.

What descaling does—and does not—clean

Descaling targets mineral deposits inside the water circuit. It is different from routine cleaning:

  • Backflushing or brew-path cleaning removes coffee oils and residue from the group head and valves.
  • Portafilter and basket cleaning removes accumulated coffee residue.
  • Steam-wand cleaning removes milk residue from the wand and its tip.
  • Descaling dissolves mineral buildup caused by hard water.

A machine may need both descaling and coffee-oil cleaning. Descaling will not remove milk residue or replace regular steam-wand purging.

If the machine still has poor flow after descaling

If flow remains weak, check the likely physical causes in this order:

  1. Water filter or tank: Confirm the filter is installed correctly and has not reached the end of its service life. Make sure the tank is seated fully and its outlet is not blocked.
  2. Portafilter, basket, or brew outlet: Remove the basket and rinse it. Clear visible coffee residue from the holes using the method permitted by the manufacturer. Do not force metal objects into delicate openings.
  3. Hose or outlet blockage: Check for kinks, trapped air, or visible debris in accessible tubing and outlets. Do not dismantle a pressurized or heated machine unless the manufacturer specifically permits it.
  4. Leaks or poor seals: Inspect the tank connection, group-head seal, and visible fittings for drips. A damaged gasket can reduce pressure or allow water to escape.
  5. Incorrect setup: Confirm that the water tank has enough water, the machine is fully heated, and the brew control is being used correctly.
  6. Internal scale or pump problem: If the pump is unusually loud, the machine repeatedly loses prime, or water does not move after a correct descale and rinse, stop using it and contact the manufacturer or a qualified appliance technician.

If the machine leaks, trips a breaker, smells of burning, or has damaged electrical components, unplug it if safe to do so and arrange professional service. Do not open the housing while the machine is connected to power.

How to reduce future scale buildup

  • Use water within the hardness range specified by the manufacturer.
  • Replace the machine’s water filter on schedule if one is supported.
  • Empty and rinse the water tank regularly rather than allowing old water to sit.
  • Follow the machine’s descaling reminders instead of waiting for severe symptoms.
  • Keep the brew group, basket, portafilter, and steam wand clean so coffee or milk residue is not mistaken for scale.

If a machine is several years old, has recurring blockages, or continues to perform poorly after a compatible descale and thorough rinse, a replacement pump, valve, gasket, or other service part may be reasonable. Internal repairs should follow the manufacturer’s guidance or be handled by a qualified professional.
